BCAP After School Program

With BCAP After-School, Heart of Brooklyn brings BCAP Summer’s successful curriculum model to children from public housing in Brooklyn in partnership with NYCHA leadership. On afternoons during the school year, children ages 7–12 at participating NYCHA residences are able to explore the arts and sciences with visits to HOB member institutions and hands-on activities free of charge to families.

Program Elements
BCAP After-School begins in the fall with a Kick-Off Event welcoming residents to the program and introducing children and families to the broader offerings of the HOB member institutions. Staff from all HOB member institutions will be present to offer hands-on activities and live presentations. Past activities included a mask-making workshop with artist educators from the Brooklyn Museum and children’s poetry readings from the Brooklyn Public Library.

After the Kick-Off, children participate in 14 weekly sessions based on our successful thematic curriculum. The sessions are held at the HOB member institutions, with transportation provided by Heart of Brooklyn to its cultural campus. The BCAP After-School group experiences intensive and engaging activities in the arts and sciences that directly advance their reasoning, interpersonal, and creative skills.

After children have completed the 14-week program, HOB offers Family Fun Day in the Heart of Brooklyn in June for participants and their families. HOB provides free lunch, transportation and admission to HOB institutions, where children can share their discoveries with friends and family.
