The Day: Brooklyn Goes to Washington

Rise and shine, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, let’s jump right in, shall we?

Yesterday First Lady Michelle Obama presented the Brooklyn Cultural Adventures Program (BCAP) Initiative with a National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award. The award is the highest honor given in the United Sates to exceptional after-school and out-of-school programs and BCAP was selected from a pool of more than 400 nominations. The ceremony took place at the White House and Ellen F. Salpeter, Heart of Brooklyn Founding Director, and Jamell Allen-Thomas, a BCAP Summer Camp Adventurer, accepted the award on behalf of the entire Brooklyn-based program. Way to go, Brooklyn!

In other Brooklyn-wide news, a new bus line called the “Know It Express” that connects Brooklyn with D.C. will debut tomorrow, according to The New York Times. There are already a handful of bus companies that commute between New York, Philadelphia and Washington, but the new line will completely bypass Manhattan and downtown Washington altogether, and will stop at Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn and U Street in D.C. For more info and prices check out their website.

The history of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill can now be seen between the pages of a detailed coffee-table book. Presented by the Brooklyn Historical Society and written by Francis Morrone, the 108-page book is the eighth in the Neighborhood and Architectural History Guide series spotlighting the rich history in Brooklyn neighborhoods. The FG/CH version is the most ambitious and detailed book to date, said the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.
