Heart of Brooklyn Named Semifinalist of The 2011 New York Times Company Nonprofit Excellence Awards

(24-Feb-2011 - Brooklyn, NY) New York, NY Heart of Brooklyn (HOB), a consortium of the leading cultural institutions near Grand Army Plaza, was recognized today by the New York Times Company, the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York and Philanthropy New York as a 2011 semifinalist of The New York Times Company Nonprofit Excellence Award. Heart of Brooklyn is competing against ten other organizations for a cash grant and a scholarship to be applied toward Social Enterprise Programs at Columbia Business School Executive Education. With programs in youth education, neighborhood revitalization, tourism, marketing and research, Heart of Brooklyn (HOB) is also celebrating its tenth anniversary this year.

Founding Director Ellen Salpeter stated today, “Heart of Brooklyn has clearly demonstrated the value of collective planning and action, and is now being recognized for its overall management excellence. We are honored to achieve this recognition as we celebrate our tenth anniversary this year.”

The New York Times Company Nonprofit Excellence Awards are presented annually to nonprofits in the New York City area (the five boroughs, Long Island and Westchester) for excellence in organizational management. The Awards include an extensive three-step judging process, including two stages of written applications and site visits where each organization is judged on its management and laser-like focus on its mission.

In the initial round of applications, each organization was asked to explain how they accomplished their goals while addressing multiple challenges. The winners will be announced on June 23 at TheTimesCenter during a Best Practices Workshop and Awards Ceremony.
